I also pay close attention to how the tree has grown toward available light. A canopy leaning toward a house may carry considerably more weight on one side, especially if previous pruning has encouraged uneven regrowth over several seasons. Matching the Removal Method to the Property

Access usually decides which equipment I can realistically use. A wide front yard might allow a chipper, truck, and additional rigging equipment close to the work area, while an older property with a narrow side path may require almost everything to be carried out by hand. I have worked on sites where the usable gap beside the house was barely 900 millimetres. On jobs like that, every branch needs to be cut with cleanup and removal in mind.

The shape of the canopy, wood condition, access, nearby structures, and available drop zone all matter. I price and plan around those details.

Dead trees require particular care because I cannot assume the branches will behave like living wood. A branch that once flexed under load may snap suddenly after deterioration, and an old trunk can have hidden weaknesses beneath apparently solid bark. I reduce unnecessary movement when I climb questionable trees, and sometimes I use mechanical access if the site allows it. Every dead tree is different.

Another difficult situation is a tree with several heavy stems forming from one junction. I once dealt with a backyard specimen where 3 substantial leaders divided fairly low on the trunk and one extended directly over a neighbour’s garage. I could not simply remove whichever leader looked easiest first because changing the weight distribution too quickly would have affected the remaining structure. I dismantled the canopy gradually and kept checking how the tree responded.

Wind changes my thinking too. Light movement in the upper canopy can become much stronger once I climb above nearby roofs and fences, particularly in exposed parts of a property. If gusts make accurate lowering difficult, I would rather change the sequence or stop a particular operation than force the job forward. Chainsaws do not care about schedules.

Why Cleanup Needs to Be Planned Before the First Cut

I learned early that a removal is not finished when the trunk reaches ground level. On many suburban jobs, the larger challenge is moving several cubic metres of branches, logs, sawdust, and woodchip through limited access without damaging lawns or paved areas. I plan the direction of material flow before climbing. Otherwise the ground crew can quickly become buried under branches.

I like to keep one clear movement path from the work zone toward the chipper or loading area. If that path becomes blocked, every later branch takes longer to process and people start stepping over unstable piles while carrying equipment. Log size also affects cleanup. Stump work is another separate decision. I usually ask about future plans before deciding how low to make the final cut. A difference of 10 centimetres can matter when another machine needs access later.

The Conversations I Have With Owners Before Starting

I prefer to discuss boundaries before equipment arrives. I ask where vehicles can park, whether gates need to stay closed for pets, which garden areas are sensitive, and whether neighbours need advance notice about access or noise. These details may seem minor compared with climbing a large tree, but they often determine whether the day runs smoothly. I would rather spend 10 minutes discussing them than discover a problem halfway through the job.

I also explain what I expect the site to look like afterward. Woodchip can spread farther than people imagine, small twigs sometimes hide under shrubs, and moving logs across soft ground can leave marks even when the crew works carefully. I try to distinguish normal worksite disturbance from avoidable damage. Clear expectations prevent arguments later.

People occasionally ask me whether a tree really needs removal or could simply be pruned. I do not think removal should automatically be the first choice because some trees can remain useful and manageable after carefully selected pruning. Other situations are different, particularly where structural decline, severe damage, unsuitable location, or repeated conflicts make retention impractical. I base my opinion on the individual tree rather than treating every large canopy as a problem.

Costs can vary considerably because the tree is only one part of the job. Two similar trees may require very different amounts of labour if one stands beside an open driveway and the other sits behind a house with no machine access. I encourage owners to ask what equipment, cleanup, stump work, and disposal are included rather than focusing on a single number. A cheaper quote can describe a smaller scope.

What Years of Climbing Have Changed About My Approach

I used to think efficiency mostly meant cutting faster and getting material onto the ground quickly. Experience changed that view. I now think an efficient job is one where every major piece has a planned destination and the ground crew rarely needs to correct something that could have been anticipated. Slow preparation often produces faster work.

I also pay more attention to fatigue than I did earlier in my career. A climber may spend 4 or 5 hours repeatedly positioning, cutting, controlling ropes, and supporting body weight in a harness, and decision quality can slip if breaks are ignored. I would rather come down, drink water, reset equipment, and return to the canopy with a clear head. Ten minutes can prevent a poor decision.

The same applies to machinery and ropes. I inspect climbing equipment regularly, keep cutting gear maintained, and replace components before they become unreliable because tree work gives very little tolerance for equipment failure. I have seen a slightly blunt saw turn a controlled cut into unnecessary wrestling in an awkward position. Sharp equipment makes precise work easier.

I still enjoy difficult removals because every property creates a slightly different puzzle. Ringwood has plenty of established blocks where mature trees, older homes, newer extensions, fences, gardens, and neighbouring structures all compete for the same limited space. I approach those jobs by controlling one problem at a time rather than trying to overpower the tree. That method has served me far better than rushing ever did.

I would want to know where the branches would land, how the trunk would be dismantled, what access the crew required, and what condition the site would be left in.
